Developmental Editing

You’ve poured your heart into your novel, but now you’re too close to see what’s working and what’s not. You want to strengthen your story, but you’re not sure how. You need a fresh, experienced eye to help you shape your manuscript without losing your voice.

Without clear feedback, it’s easy to miss plot holes, pacing issues, or flat characters. You might over-edit, watering down your story, or under-edit, leaving it rough and unfinished. Trying to do it by yourself has left you feeling frustrated and unsure of your next steps.

I help writers like you, who care deeply about their stories find clarity, confidence, and direction through thoughtful, respectful editing. As an Author Accelerator certified book-writing coach and developmental editor, my goal is to help you see both the big picture and the fine details so you can feel proud of the book you present to the world.

"Your superpower is showing versus telling. And POV. And catching overused words! You have got that nailed and it really makes for a richer prose."  Holly Kerr, author

Your First Chapter
(3000 words)

This is an easy, low-investment option if you’re feeling hesitant or curious about what it’s like to work with me, are looking for insight and suggestions for improving your writing and craft skills, or wanting feedback on your story's kick-off.

You’ll send me:

  • The first chapter of your novel or memoir, up to 3000 words.
  • Completed mini-blueprint (I’ll provide).

Deliverables from me to you:

  • My time and attention as I do multiple reads, take notes, consider and formulate my comments and questions. This is the unquantifiable mental labour involved in evaluating a manuscript, and is often the most time-intensive.
  • Comments written directly in the manuscript pages.
  • Comments written directly on the pages of the mini-blueprint
  • A short editorial letter summarizing my findings.
  • A follow-up call to verbally discuss the critique.

About Editorial Letters

The editorial letter is a summary of findings, from big-picture elements such as structure, pacing, and character development, and theme, right down to line level issues.

In all manuscript audits, I look at all aspects of your submitted pages from start to finish. Editorial letters vary in length depending on the number of pages submitted and what I discover inside of them, of course.

At the end of each letter, I will provide clear, actionable next steps for you to take, as well as a curated list of resources (articles, books, podcasts).

My goal is to give you the information you need make your novel as strong and engaging as possible.

✖️ While I may point out grammar, spelling, or punctuation errors the first few times they occur, I am NOT a copy editor or proof reader. If you require the services of a copy editor or proof reader, let me know and I'll be happy to recommend a colleague or two.

✔️ I am, however, available for line editing. Please inquire.

Revise your novel with confidence

Please Note that I work exclusively in Microsoft Word.

Any manuscript pages you send must be:

-  saved as a .doc or .docx.

- in industry standard formatting, which is 12-point Times New Roman font; double spaced; no extra spaces between lines; 1-inch margins.

Also note that I use the track changes and margin notes feature found under the MS Word review tab. Please ask if you have questions or need help learning how to use these features. I'm not scary.
